Lizzo has shared a new trailer for an upcoming documentary set to air later this month on HBO Max. The project, called Love, Lizzo, explores the singer’s rise to fame. Fans can stream the documentary on November 24.
Lizzo Teases HBO Max Documentary in New Trailer
“No matter what part of my story you come in at, I’m always chasing the music,” Lizzo says in the trailer, adding, “Y’all have no idea how close I was to this not being a thing.”
Lizzo, whose real name is Melissa Jefferson, goes on to say that she wrote pop songs when she was growing up, but she “didn’t have the confidence in my voice.” The trailer includes home video footage of Lizzo when she was younger.
“Nobody was trying to sign a fat Black girl that rapped, sang, and played the flute,” Lizzo says about her experience in the music industry, adding, “It took so much hard work to get to where I am today. But I found my voice. Now, when people see me on stage, they see themselves.”

The Singer Says She’s “Nervous But Excited” About the Project
Lizzo shared the new trailer for the documentary on her Instagram account, writing, “Taking ownership of my story— I’m nervous but excited to share with y’all.” The singer first announced the project earlier this year.
“I’m so excited I get to share and relive my journey with my fans and HBO Max,” Lizzo said in a statement. “From ‘Cuz I Love You’ to my dramatic world tour, losing and gaining love, and creating my new album ‘Special,’ y’all get to see the amount of time, patience, blood, sweat and tears that went into this process. It takes ten years to become an ‘overnight success,’ and hopefully I can inspire other young creatives to keep going.”
In July, Lizzo released her fourth studio album, titled Special. Her competition show Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls also won an Emmy for Outstanding Competition Program this year, ending a four-year streak held by RuPaul’s Drag Race.
