Rooster Teeth, the division of WarnerMedia’s Otter Media dedicated to sci-fi, gaming, animation and fandom, has canceled its flagship RTX 2020 convention. Instead, it’s planning a virtual event for fans in its place.
The decision came after the Austin Public Health department determined that the annual convention cannot be held at the Austin Convention Center. It had been set to run Sept. 5-7, 2020 (after already previously been postponed from July).
“Despite all our wishes and best efforts to bring us together in person this year, due to citywide restrictions on large-scale events, RTX Austin 2020 has officially been cancelled,” the company announced on its website Thursday.
Further details about the virtual RTX event will be shared when they become available, Rooster Teeth said. Those who bought tickets will receive refunds, or they can opt to postpone their badge to RTX 2021 (at this link), which is scheduled for July 9-11, 2021.

Tickets for RTX 2020 ranged from $14 for a one-day pass to the Expo, up to the Ultra $1,500 ticket with numerous perks including full access to RTX, RTX Expo, and RTX Animation Festival, fast-pass security check-in, and priority seating in panel rooms.
Rooster Teeth describes the event, which it has held since 2011, as “the best three-day animation, gaming and comedy experience you can attend!” According to the company, RTX 2019 drew more than 65,000 attendees.
Austin-based Rooster Teeth is housed within Otter Media, the digital media division of AT&T’s WarnerMedia. Last fall, the company laid off 13% of its staff. It then brought in TV veteran Jordan Levin as general manager as part of a reorg in which co-founders Matt Hullum, Geoff Ramsey and Burnie Burns took on new creative roles; Burns earlier this month announced his exit from RT and said he plans to move out of the U.S.
